for paper-related matters

Something about the paper unclear to you?  Have an idea you want to try out on others?  Want to share something interesting you've learned?  Frustrated and want to vent?  Whatever it is, if it's paper-related, here's your opportunity...

  1. If I'm doing my paper about censorship, do you think Sears taking down the swastika jewelry off their website because of customer pressure could e considered censorship.

  2. Censorship is usually understood as involving government action. Since Sears is a private business, this wouldn't count. Of course, one can use "censorship" in a broader sense, to mean something like any action taken to prevent the expression of ideas. By that definition it might count. It doesn't much matter which definition is used, so long as it's made clear and used consistently throughout the paper.

You may have intended to ask, not about whether it counts as censorship, but whether it is problematic in the way that censorship is usually taken to be. That's an interesting question. I'm not familiar with the case -- was the jewelry deliberately designed to look like the Nazi symbol? If not, then it might be a case of over-reaction, although that wouldn't really be the same kind of criticism as that it's (like) censorship.
